New Smart Gloves to Monitor Parkinson’s Disease

New Smart Gloves to Monitor Parkinson's Disease

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have developed smart gloves that measure tremors and rigidity in fingers – common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease – allowing doctors to monitor patients using smartphones.

The gloves are connected to smartphones, which process the data and deliver it to neurologists in their offices.

This way, doctors can manage the treatment plan of the patient day-to-day, ensuring that medication is working properly and eliminating the need for patients to make stressful clinical visits, researchers said.

Kunal Mankodiya, director of University of Rhode Island’s Wearable Biosensing Laboratory, said he is researching how to transform gloves, socks, clothing and even shoes into high-tech items that will make people healthier and improve their lives.

“Patients with Parkinson’s face many mobility issues – driving and even walking long distances,”Mankodiya said.

“The glove will give patients the option of receiving health care while remaining at home, and it also reduces the risk of falls and other accidents,” he said.

Mankodiya is also working on high-tech socks for people who have suffered strokes.

Sensors woven into the fabric relay information about a patient’s gait to doctors and physical therapists so they can tailor rehabilitation therapy to each patient.

“The socks examine the walking stride. They can quantify movements of the knee and ankle joints to find subtle irregularities that require therapy,” Mankodiya said.

Scientists May Have Finally Cracked the Curious Case of Sun’s Tilt

Scientists May Have Finally Cracked the Curious Case of Sun's Tilt

Planet Nine – the undiscovered one at the edge of our solar system — appears to be responsible for the unusual tilt of the Sun, say researchers.

Planet Nine was predicted by Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown from California Institute of Technology’s (Caltech) in January this year.

The large and distant planet may be adding a wobble to the solar system, giving the appearance that the Sun is tilted slightly.

“Because Planet Nine is so massive and has an orbit tilted compared to the other planets, the solar system has no choice but to slowly twist out of alignment,” said Elizabeth Bailey, graduate student at Caltech and lead author of a study announcing the discovery.

All of the planets orbit in a flat plane with respect to the Sun, roughly within a couple degrees of each other.

That plane, however, rotates at a six-degree tilt with respect to the Sun-giving the appearance that the Sun itself is cocked off at an angle.

Brown and Batygin’s discovery of evidence that the Sun is orbited by an as-yet-unseen planet – that is about 10 times the size of Earth with an orbit that is about 20 times farther from the Sun on average than Neptune’s – changes the physics.

Planet Nine, based on their calculations, appears to orbit at about 30 degrees off from the other planets’ orbital plane, influencing the orbit of a large population of objects in the Kuiper Belt.

“Every time we look carefully, we continue to find that Planet Nine explains something about the solar system that had long been a mystery,” added Batygin, assistant professor of planetary science.

How did Planet Nine achieve its unusual orbit?
Though that remains to be determined, Batygin suggests that the planet may have been ejected from the neighbourhood of the gas giants by Jupiter, or perhaps may have been influenced by the gravitational pull of other stellar bodies in the solar system’s extreme past.

The findings have been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Sony Launches 4K HDR Projector at $14,999; Unveils Its First UHD Blu-ray Player

Sony Launches 4K HDR Projector at $14,999; Unveils Its First UHD Blu-ray Player

  • The Sony 4K projector costs $14,999 (roughly Rs. 10 lakhs)
  • The Ultra-HD Blu-ray player’s price is not announced yet
  • The products were announced by Sony at CEDIA 2016

In what may make avid 4K video watchers happy, Sony on Wednesday launched a 4K HDR projector – the VPL-VW675ES. Sony’s VPL-VW675ES 4K HDR projector is said to be the first projector that supports Hybrid-Log Gamma HDR. Sony has priced the 4K projector at a whopping $14,999 (roughly Rs. 10 lakhs) to strengthen its SXRD projector technology.

Sony’s 4K projector was announced at CEDIA 2016 being held in Dallas from September 13 to 17. The new VPL-VW675ES has a contrast ratio of 350,000:1 with a brightness of 1,800 lumens. It uses HDCP 2.2 so that 4K content cannot be copied illegally. It has a bulb that is claimed to last for about 6,000 hours. With that a specification, it is one of the best 4K projectors that can also project real ultra-HD images, and just not fake it.

As per a CEPro report, Andre Floyd, Sony’s Product Marketing Manager, thinks that the “JVC’s and Epson’s current line of “4K” projectors can never get to full UHD because they start with an HD imager (1920×1080) that has only 2 million pixels”. He added that “Full 4K is 8 million pixels” and Sony’s new projector features the technology.

It can also stream content from number of services that include Amazon and Netflix. The new Sony 4K HDR projector is also compatible with standard definition technology.

At the same custom installer show CEDIA 2016, Sony also showcased its first Ultra-HD Blu-ray player. The UBP-X1000ES offers full Custom Installation (CI) compatibility along with a number of additional features. The UHD Blu-ray player will ship in the spring next year.

Besides supporting UHD videos, the UBP-X1000ES employs a Sony-developed Precision-HD drive that maintains consistent performance with virtually every optical disc format, like Blu-ray 3D, DVDs, CDs. The video processing technology in the player can upscale the full-HD (1080p) video to 4K 60p resolution. The Blu-ray player is equipped with audio compatible receivers that can match Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The price of the Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray has not been announced yet.

How to Save a Google Hangouts Session with Movavi Screen Capture Studio

Ever since Google Hangouts launched a few years back it quickly became a much-used system of communication. By allowing users to place video calls, hold video conferences, and quite literally ‘hang out’ with one another – it is definitely an invaluable tool that many people use on a daily basis.

The one problem that you may have with Google Hangouts is the fact that it doesn’t let you save your sessions so that you can refer back to them. At first that may not seem like a big deal, but think about how useful it would be if you could refer back to important information from a work Hangout session, or if you could save some of those precious moments that took place when you were hanging out with a close friend or family member.

The good news is that if you want to do all that the only thing you need is Movavi Screen Capture Studio. As screen capture software it can record your screen so in this case you simply need to set it to record the session while it is taking place. To learn how to record a Google Hangout, it just takes a few simple steps:

  1. Launch Movavi Screen Capture Studio and select ‘Capture screen’ from the main menu.
  2. Adjust the capture frame to encompass the Google Hangout session that you want to record.
  3. Check that the audio source is set to ‘System Audio’.
  4. Click ‘REC’ to start recording as the Hangout session begins.
  5. Click ‘Stop’ to stop when the Hangout session is over and then save it by clicking ‘Save’.

Aside from the fact that it is so easy to use, one of the perks that comes with using Movavi Screen Capture Studio to save Google Hangouts sessions is that you can edit them as and how you see fit. With its features you will be able to cut and combine video segments, enhance the video quality, insert customization text, add audio tracks, and even play around with special effects and filters.

While you may not need all these features right now, having them around may prove useful at some point or other. For now, why not take advantage of Movavi Screen Capture Studio and record your very first Hangout session to see how simple and straightforward it is to do so.

Transfer Data and Applications with EaseUS Windows 10 Migration Tool

Upgrading a computer or getting shifted from one OS to another may seem to be a fun as it brings new working experience but it is not at all a cakewalk. It may seem to be a fun but it also brings many big problems for example, transferring complete data from the old version to new version is a task and this can be easily accomplished by the Product: EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro. We always wish to buy new-new products and latest devices and same is the case with computers but at times transferring every single file from one computer to another seems to be difficult.

EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro is the PC transfer and disk clone software that enables you to transfer every kind of file from one computer to another but it too has a limitation and that is: It can only transfer files from one computer to another if they have either same OS or from later to the new version after Windows in-case upgrade. No matter what the scenario is until your computer fulfils the OS criteria EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro will do great job for you.

Some of the benefits of usingEaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro are:

  • Best PC migration software: PC migration is the most common problem which accompanies new computer but it does not mean you will stop changing computers. Work with EaseUS Todo PC Trans Pro because it is the best Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 windows 10 migration tool .

  • It can transfer selective files: The problem of inability to transfer selective files does not exist with EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro which makes it more user-friendly. Now, with the help of EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro migration tool you can as many numbers of files you want irrespective of their file type.
  • No technical knowledge required: This is my favourite as lack of technical skills may lead to incompletion of operation because it increases complexity and the people with no technical background find themselves puzzled. EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro is easy-to-use and does not include anything which may require you to have technical knowledge. This ultimately makes EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro the best choice for data migration.
  • Paid and free, both are available: Both the free and the paid version of EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro are available. This actually gives you a chance to understand the software and get to know whether it will be okay for you or not. If you find the free version absolutely fine for you then you can go for the paid versions too. The benefit of paid versions is that they provide better and more advanced features that are not present in the free version.

Rover to Mine for Water on Mars Designed

Researchers have developed the prototype of a specialised rover that could one day be used by human colonies on Mars to “mine” for water below the Red Planet’s surface.

The early prototype of the rover, Mars Aqua Retrieval System (M.A.R.S.), was developed through a collaboration between the Singapore University of Technology and Design, and Australia’s Gilmour Space Technologies.

With a budget of just $10,000 (roughly Rs. 6,61,785), the team managed to create a prototype designed to function on Earth, but with the ability to withstand 30 percent of Mars’ temperature and pressure conditions.

Discoveries by Curiosity and the Phoenix Mars Lander, among others, indicate water is present on the Red Planet, either buried in its soil or in non-liquid forms like ice.

M.A.R.S. is designed to extract the water from the soil, collect, and store it. The concept involves the use of microwaves and a cold trap to separate and collect the liquid, Gizmag reported.

Each cycle of the water-collection process involves using a basic locomotion system with two powered wheels to move to the target area, then lowering a microwave unit over the ground and using it to heat up the area for 20 minutes.

The resulting steam then enters collection pipes leading to a condenser bag where it condenses and drips into a collection box.

The team claims it has been able to collect water from frozen soil at a rate of four grams per four minutes in tests. The team also said that details of the M.A.R.S. design were sent to Nasa and the US space agency “replied back favourably.”

3D-Printed ‘Microfish’ Could Be Used for Human Drug Delivery

Researchers have developed 3D-printed magnetically controlled fish-shaped microrobots that could be used for directed drug delivery in humans.

Nanoengineers used an innovative 3D printing technology to manufacture multipurpose fish-shaped microrobots – called microfish – that are chemically powered by hydrogen peroxide and magnetically controlled. These proof-of-concept synthetic microfish will inspire a new generation of “smart” microrobots that have diverse capabilities such as detoxification, sensing and directed drug delivery, researchers said.

Researchers led by Shaochen Chen and Joseph Wang of the University of California, San Diego, were able to custom-build microfish that can do more than simply swim around when placed in a solution containing hydrogen peroxide.

Researchers installed platinum nanoparticles in the tails of the microfish, which react with hydrogen peroxide to propel the microfish forward, and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in the heads, which allowed them to be steered with magnets. “We have developed an entirely new method to engineer nature-inspired microscopic swimmers that have complex geometric structures and are smaller than the width of a human hair,” said the co-first author Wei Zhu, a PhD student at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego.

As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the researchers incorporated toxin-neutralising nanoparticles throughout the bodies of the microfish.

The researchers mixed in polydiacetylene (PDA) nanoparticles, which capture harmful pore-forming toxins such as the ones found in bee venom. When the PDA nanoparticles bind with toxin molecules, they become fluorescent and emit red-coloured light. The team was able to monitor the detoxification ability of the microfish by the intensity of their red glow.

“Another exciting possibility we could explore is to encapsulate medicines inside the microfish and use them for directed drug delivery,” said co-first author Jinxing Li, PhD student at UC San Diego.

The new microfish fabrication method is based on a rapid, high-resolution 3D printing technology called microscale continuous optical printing (micro-COP). Some of the benefits of the micro-COP technology are speed, scalability, precision and flexibility.

Within seconds, the researchers can print an array containing hundreds of microfish, each measuring 120 microns long and 30 microns thick.

Since the micro-COP technology is digitised, researchers could easily experiment with different designs for their microfish, including shark and manta ray shapes. The research was published in the journal Advanced Materials.
